Casual Geometry: Dimensions in Hand Building

A Workshop with Mark Pharis

 

Saturday- Sunday, October 16-17, 10am – 4pm

Fee: $180 members; $200 non-members

 

Slide Lecture: Friday, October 15, 7pm  (free for workshop participants & CAC members, $5 non-members)

 

This demonstration workshop will focus on handbuilding utilitarian forms. Those attending will be asked to consider ideas surrounding function and process from the perspective of both throwing and hand building. We will consider pragmatics of use, function and conceptual perspectives associated with pots – 2D to 3D and back again, idea, symbol, metaphor, and the meaning of process.  The workshop will include handbuilding demonstrations, patternmaking, discussions, and a slide presentation.  

 

 
Mark Pharis received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolisin 1971. Between 1971 and 1985, Pharis was employed by many Universities (mostly Midwestern) as a visiting faculty member, sabbatical replacement and summer session faculty. During this time Pharis showed in many group and two person shows as well as several solo exhibitions. In 1985, Pharis began as a professor in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota, where served as the Chair of the Department until 2004.  He has led workshops and exhibited his handbuilt earthenware pottery nationwide.
