Clay Art Center is pleased to announce a public lecture with Judith Schwartz, Ph.D. After the lecture, Judith will be signing copies of her book, Confrontational Ceramics, which will also be available for sale.
Turbulent times have driven the artists to confront society as never before. Working in styles that are aggressive, violent, disturbing, irreverent, sometimes humorous, but always passionate. The lecture describes the first international survey of contemporary sculptors, potters and mixed media artists who use clay as a medium for political and social commentary. It establishes the continued use of ceramics in contemporary art and shows that the material has never been more viable as a means of conveying ideas about life and society.
Dr. Judith S. Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Art and Art Professions at New York University. She directs the Sculpture in Craft Media area and teaches studio courses in ceramic sculpture. A prominent critic, curator and educator, Dr. Schwartz was the first to identify the use of satire in the ceramic work of Arneson, Kottler, and Gihooly. She has expanded her interest to identify an international movement of artists who use clay to reveal personal alienations, social and political struggles, popular and material culture at its worst – all within the context of what might be called: art activism.
