KATHY RUTTENBERG: Tonight, Tomorrow & Forever
May 2-23, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 2, 6-8pm
Clay Art Center is proud to present Tonight, Tomorrow & Forever, a solo exhibition featuring evocative narrative sculpture by Kathy Ruttenberg. In this exhibit featuring figures, animals and elements of nature, Ruttenberg will “play with the space of time.” The exhibit, held in the Choy Gallery, will run from May 2-23 with an opening reception on Saturday, May 2 from 6-8pm. The artist will give a gallery talk at 7pm. Additionally, in the upstairs Henry’s Project space, we will have pottery for sale by Clay Art Center Artists. Admission is free.
In her artist statement, Kathy Ruttenberg writes: “My work is an expression of inner landscapes fueled by a need to understand, explore and excavate. The subject matter is personal and universal as I strive to find the humanity in the absurd and search to express the elements of profound emotional states that twist us inside and often put us in unpredictable situations.
“The tools for my work are fire, earth and emotions; this mix makes an interesting cocktail of allegory and symbolism with an odd twist of nature. In my world where the wind blows with intensity, animals and humans often share the moment depicted. The process of clay is very fulfilling to me as it gratifies the need to explore and search in an attempt to excavate these deep emotions. Between clay and water color paint I journey many places, not all of them profound but I would not know this unless I had been there.
“Glazing can be a journey to the unknown which often ends with an element of the unexpected and the unintentional. This, too, is very much part of the process of finding new ways of seeing. The title for this show, Tonight, Tomorrow and Forever plays with the space of time. Some things are definitive and some things are the here and now, both equally important to the sensations of life. We live now, prepare for tomorrow and hope things last forever.”
