Clay Art Center is proud to present through., a solo exhibition featuring  earthenware works exploring pattern, adornment and perception by one of Clay Art Center’s 2010-11 Artists-in-Residence, Kristina Stafford.  This exhibition showcases the culmination of her year-long residency.

Admission to the gallery and the SHOP at CAC, featuring one-of-a kind handmade pottery and sculpture, is free.

In this exhibit, Kristina will be fabricating “worlds” -  incorporating her decorated three-dimensional terracotta “tiles” with paper, metal and light  to create environments in the gallery that explore pattern, adornment and perception.

About her work, Kristina states, “I love to decorate. I love color. Most days I just want a beautiful surface to adorn. My sculptural forms are often chosen and created simply as three-dimensional canvases – a surface to color on – sometimes I just feel like making something pretty. Textile design and pattern envelope my sketchbook, sculpture and pots.  I want to immerse my work in illustrations – bold cut paper designs, line quality, gloss, matte and velvety textures.

“I do judge a book by its cover – sometimes the story reflects the exterior, and other times there is a clear disconnect. Interior and exterior can both contrast and compliment; each situation is special and interesting. A lovely flowery shell covers the dark and stormy interior, or a soft pink center is coated in layers of dark and severe design.  I strive to represent these ideas in my work. Through my use of color, pattern and form, I interpret these ideas into objects.”

Kristina is currently a resident artist and instructor at the Clay Art Center in Port Chester New York. She received her BA in Art with concentrations in both Crafts and Fine Arts from Bridgewater State College and earned her MFA in Ceramics from the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology in 2008. She worked as studio manager for the 3D department as well as Visiting Assistant Professor teaching 2D, 3D and Ceramics at Bridgewater State College. Kristina maintains an active studio practice that includes sculpture, tiles, and functional ceramics.
