About Marlene Parillo & DreamCity:
About her evocative narrative sculpture and mixed media tapestries, Marlene states "My work is concerned with visual storytelling. I use themes that are common to most people like grief, love, relationships, frustration, anxiety, concern for the condition of our planet, and the silliness that is necessary to manage a life that includes both children and art. I live in a house full of animals, children, plants, art, energy, joy and despair (but never boredom). All of these experiences find their way into my stories, sometimes being acted out by imaginary composite animals, sometimes by the human form. It is always my intention to connect my feelings and observations to that of the viewer. In recognizing the specific, our experiences are made universal.

"All of my ceramic sculptures are functional objects; opening in some way as storage vessels. I believe that this makes the sculptures interactive; encouraging the owner to handle them, and consider what kind of object might live inside.  Traditionally I've told my stories exclusively through ceramics, but more recently I've expanded my media choices, using fabric, embroidery, and beadwork to express my ideas. These latest creations - my tapestries - are a highly textured, eclectic mix of everything I like to do.

"My ceramic sculptures are made of stoneware clay, glazed and fired to cone 6. My tapestries are drawings that are embroidered and sculpted out of clay, sewn together and embellished with beadwork. The ceramic fixtures are attached with refractory wire that is sewn onto the cloth."
