In this 2-weekend hands-on workshop, students will explore the many possibilities in jewelry- making with porcelain with Italian clay artist Luca Tripaldi, making light sculpture to wear. On the first weekend students will begin building with white and black stained porcelain, using different techniques of shaping. Luca will explain how to achieve perfectly round rings and necklace closings, and the class will learn to use paper clay and plaster molds to achieve varied surfaces and forms. On subsequent days, after bisque firing the pieces, the class will work on finishing their pieces – from sanding and glazing to using decals and gold and platinum lusters. On the last day, Luca will give a slide show on contemporary jewelry, explaining and demonstrating the many different techniques of stringing necklaces, and assembling rings and earrings. The class will then have the opportunity to finish their own works. $35 lab fee includes porcelain, all firings, lusters, decals, strings and clasps.
