Clay Art Center is pleased to present UNDER COVER, a national invitational exhibition featuring 89 lidded containers by 89 clay artists. The exhibit, which will be displayed in both the Choy Gallery and the Henry’s Project gallery, will run from February 7 – March 7, 2009 with an opening reception on Saturday, February 7, from 6-8pm. Admission is free.
UNDER COVER, as the title suggests, will feature covered containers – boxes, lidded casseroles, covered jars, sugar bowls, canisters, etc. Non-functional or sculptural works that deal with issues of containment will also be featured. We envision that the word play in the title will encourage some artistic exploration and interpretation, as a lidded container can store items, but can also hide them. What is inside the pot? Is it meant for something special? Something secret? Or is it simply a form that is satisfying a specific function – to contain something, whatever it is. Regardless, UNDER COVER will persuade us think about our daily rituals, encouraging us to use handmade containers for our many storing practices.
