From beginning as an artists' collective in 1957 conceived by two visionaries - Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto - to becoming a nationally recognized nonprofit organization for the ceramic arts, Clay Art Center proudly serves the clay community today with educational programming, artist studios, residencies, exhibitions, and community arts programming. As part of the programming around the 70th Anniversary of Clay Art Center, the gallery will host a special invitational exhibition featuring handmade ceramic tiles from over 150 local, regional, and nationally based artists. Side By Side will pay homage to the deep connections we have fostered in the clay community, and continue to build in the local community. This exhibition is the third in an anniversary series with Transformations in 2017, and Redux in 2007.
Artists will present 6” x 6” tile works in their own creative voice, as well as addressing themes of connection, building communities, and growth. Works will range in style from traditional surfaces and treatments to high relief works, and will represent a diverse body of styles and voices working in ceramics today in the US. This anniversary year, we will also present tiles from our community arts programs as we concurrently celebrate the 20th anniversary of becoming a nonprofit organization. In recognition of our humble beginnings in an industrial area, this exhibition will feature work accessibly priced for audiences at $400 and under.
Side by Side will be on view at Clay Art Center Gallery concurrently with On Solid Ground, an exhibition celebrating the life and work of our co-founders Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto. Together, these exhibitions share our remarkable story, and offer a glimpse of what yet is to come.
