Finding Space and Time: The Clay Art Center Artist Program
As our annual Clay Art Center Artists exhibition goes on view, learn more about the Artist Program that sustains the participating artists.
Since Clay Art Center’s founding in 1957, artists (and the cross-pollination possible when you get a critical mass of artists in one space) have been an integral part of our community. The search for ready access to clay, kilns, and glaze materials has been a hallmark of the modern ceramicist’s experience, and finding those resources outside of a commercial or production pottery studio has been part of what has made Clay Art Center special for nearly 70 years. Today, the Artist Program continues to provide access to raw materials and kilns, as well as private and shared spaces where artists can work within a community setting. That is, of course, just the beginning: below, artists featured in the Space & Time exhibition share more about why the Artist Program is important to them.
“I’m so grateful for the Clay Art Center artist program because as an artist and sculptor with a demanding full time day job, it’s really difficult to find the time to work on my ceramic sculptures. Having unlimited 24-hour access to a space that lets me work on my ceramic sculptures whenever I have the time and energy is so important to me. I love taking the classes too when they align with my schedule and interests. I really appreciate the chance to be a part of the Clay Art Center community and get to know and learn from other ceramic artists. The exhibitions are also a really nice way to keep showing and sharing my work with others, despite having a busy schedule, and also to celebrate the work of my fellow artists. I love the feeling of community at these events. This place is just wonderful! “ - Caito Stewart
“I love being a part of the Clay Art Center artist community, where I am able to exchange ideas with fellow artists and staff, as well as receive and extend help wherever needed. Being able to interact with the staff and other artists and contribute to the organization in various ways makes my time here as an artist truly fulfilling.” - Sheetal Mehta
“Being a ceramic artist brings unique challenges that are best supported in a community of practice. Having Clay Art Center right here where we can meet, learn, work alongside one another, handle works and look at glazes together- this is all really important. There is just so much to know and explore that you can’t do it all alone. Plus the kilns are great!” - Bob Clyatt
“As a CAC artist member, I welcome the opportunity to participate in thematic curated exhibitions in our Gallery, and the challenges they present. For this exhibition, I focused on a central question: How can space be “described” through an object? My piece developed from this inquiry and reflects on it. I also value serving on the Artist Exhibition Committee, where our team collaborates throughout the exhibition process, from the initial concept to the final installation. This experience significantly contributes to an artist’s ability to develop their own exhibitions and collaborate in group projects.” - Denis Licul
“The artist program offers a shared creative workspace designed to provide artists with affordable, flexible access to professional studio space. Members can work independently on their own schedules, allowing for creative freedom without the financial burden of maintaining a private studio. Beyond providing space, the program fosters a vibrant and inclusive community. Artists have the opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and receive constructive feedback that supports both artistic and professional growth. The environment encourages open dialogue, skill-sharing, and mentorship among peers at various stages of their creative journeys. At its core, the artist program celebrates cultural diversity and creative expression. By bringing together artists from different backgrounds, disciplines, and perspectives, the space becomes a hub for cross-cultural inspiration, and meaningful connection.” - Sylvia Arakas-Gutierrez
