That's A Wrap! Around the World in Clay 2025-26
Around the World in Clay, Clay Art Center’s free afterschool program for Port Chester students, marks the end of another successful term. | Around the World in Clay, el programa extraescolar gratuito para los estudiantes de Port Chester, marca el final de otra sesión exitosa.
Another term of Around the World in Clay has come to an end, and that means it’s time to gather with students and their families and loved ones to celebrate all the hard work they put into their projects. In the Around the World in Clay program, which serves Port Chester students in grades 2-12, participants explore the vibrant worldwide history of ceramics through projects inspired by different artistic cultural practices. From traditional ceramics that students can attempt to replicate and make their own, like Peruvian stirrup-spout bottles, to other global art practices in all kinds of mediums, Around the World in Clay projects teach students about the diversity of art, while also giving them the opportunity to engage with their own creativity and imagination. Some sources of inspiration for this past term have included:
Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, which transforms a simple sheet of paper into intricate animals and designs, emphasizing careful observation, precision, and creativity. Students sculpted ceramic animals with folded and geometric forms, exploring how clay can capture the crisp lines and playful spirit of paper creations.
The iconic cacti of Mexico and the Southwestern U.S. (admired for their resilience and unique beauty) in connection with the colorful celebrations of Cinco de Mayo, which highlight Mexican culture, art, and traditions. Students created cactus-shaped trinket boxes with removable lids, learning how to build functional ceramic forms while adding decorative details and texture.
The masks of diverse African cultures, which have been used in ceremonies, storytelling, celebrations, and community traditions for centuries, and are often characterized by bold patterns, expressive features, and symbolic meanings. Students created their own ceramic masks, exploring texture, symmetry, and facial expression through clay.
With these sources of inspiration, students took their work in many different directions, expressing themselves and their view of the world through clay. We were so excited to celebrate with our students before they head off on their well-deserved summer break. Las máscaras de distintas culturas africanas, que han sido usadas en ceremonias, la narración de historias, las celebraciones, y las tradiciones comunitarias durante siglos, y son caracterizadas por estampados llamativos, rasgos expresivos, y significados simbólicos. Los estudiantes crearon sus propias máscaras cerámicas, explorando la textura, la simetría, y la expresión facial tras la arcilla.
Con estas fuentes de inspiración, los estudiantes llevaron sus obras en muchas direcciones, expresándose y su visión del mundo a través de la arcilla.
