Artist Statement

My work seeks to evoke a sense of dynamism and life that feels instinctively familiar, transporting the viewer back to the natural world through textures reminiscent of natural formations, living beings, and organic growth.

begin my creative process with hand-drawn sketches, which I then model with software to visualize complex forms and establish toolpaths for my 3D printer. Each piece is then constructed layer by layer in a deliberate, slow progression where the passage of time and the force of gravity warp and bend the clay, lending each piece a life of its own. This process allows me to push the material's limits, producing unique organic features like my signature clay loops that are challenging to achieve through traditional methods. I use earthen shades of natural clay body and minimal glazing to keep my pieces raw and unfiltered.

The resulting works capture a duality between the rigid geometries that define the base structure and the unique textures that break away and appear to grow organically, transforming clay into dynamic forms that capture movement and the familiarity of life as witnessed in the wild.

Artist Biography

Vasudha Maiya is a California-based ceramicist whose work evokes organic, living patterns that feel instinctively familiar and transport the viewer back to the natural world.

Vasudha, a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, was named a "30 under 30” architect by Metropolis, and is a recipient of the TY Lin Prize. Her recent work, "The San Francisco River", won an honorable mention at the “Reimagining Market Street" competition juried by Norman Foster and Jony Ive. Vasudha practices as an Associate Architect at Bull Stockwell Allen, San Francisco, and is a reviewer for the AIA California Design Awards.
