Recent events in America have sharply highlighted the ongoing struggle for Social Justice and Racial Equality for African Americans in the face of police brutality and systemic racism.

This panel (1) discusses art as a tool for communication, raising awareness and affecting positive change around these social issues and (2) examines how the ceramics community can address these issues within their own institutions.

Earlene Cox

Paul Briggs

is originally from New York and is presently an Associate Professor of Art Education at the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA and Director of the historic Saturday Studios Program. Paul has exhibited widely across the US, and his work is in several private collections, as well as being featured in several educational and ceramics publications. Vinnie Bagwell

is also a New York native and renowned artist who led the conception and development of the Enslaved Africans' Rain Garden in Yonkers, NY (http://enslavedafricansraingarden.org/), and whose achievements include being awarded with public work commissions in New York and across the US. Vinnie is also co-author of "A Study of African-American Life in Yonkers From the Turn of the Century". Vinnie was just recently announced as a winner of an award from Americans for the Arts. Wesley Brown

holds an Associates of Art from Sinclair Community College, A Bachelors of Fine Art from Bowling Green State University, and a Masters of Fine Arts from Indiana University, He has completed several residencies in the US including Indiana and North Carolina, and an international residency in Jingdezhen, China. He currently lives and teaches in Dayton, Ohio and recently presented "Life Into Work" as part of Clay Art Center's ongoing Virtual Artist Talk Series.
