Enhancing Our Community Through Clay

This past week, the new planters for outside the Don Bosco Community Center were unveiled in a ribbon cutting ceremony. The planters were created by Community Arts students at Don Bosco, led by Artist-in-Residence Evelyn Mtika. | Esta semana, se revelaron las nuevas jardineras fuera del Don Bosco Community Center con una ceremonia de corte de cinta. Las jardineras fueron creadas por estudiantes de Artes comunitarias en Don Bosco, guiados por artista en residencia, Evelyn Mtika.

Yesterday we celebrated Community Arts in Port Chester with the installation of ceramic planters and a ribbon cutting ceremony at Don Bosco Community Center. Clay Art Center has been partnering with Don Bosco since we became a non-profit in 2007. Through this partnership, Clay Art Center is able to offer two weekly afterschool and summer camp clay classes at Don Bosco, as well as a one-time class for moms each Mother’s Day weekend - all work that is supported by the St. Faith’s House Foundation and our many supporters. The planters are the culmination of months of work by students in the Don Bosco afterschool clay classes. We are so proud of the work the students have done! 

The project was led by outgoing second-year Artist-in-Residence Evelyn Mtika, who got the idea for the planters while walking back to Clay Art Center after teaching one of her clay classes at Don Bosco and seeing the large, non-ceramic planters outside. Knowing that the community center is filled with the energy and creativity of the many students who attend programs there, she wanted that spirit outside. After working through the logistics of the projects with Don Bosco and Studio Manager August, Evelyn quickly got to work. From the very beginning of this project, Evelyn took care of every detail and made sure to include the ideas of every student in her class. If you look closely at the planters, you'll see all the different ideas the kids had on each of the planters. Evelyn brought the planters back to Clay Art Center, where she underglazed, glazed, and fired them. The resulting planters are a living symbol of the creativity, collaboration, and diversity of Port Chester.

Thank you to Andres Alvarez, Director of Operations at Don Bosco Community Center, and Lysa Guaman, Program Director at Don Bosco Community Center for helping coordinate the program and bringing high-quality arts education to the Port Chester community. Thanks also to our neighbors Floral Fashions, for donating the beautiful plants and offering practical advice on the construction of the planters.

Congratulations to the students who brought their enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication to this project. Together, we have created something beautiful for all our community to enjoy! We wish Evelyn Mtika well on the next stage of her journey as a ceramic artist as her residency at Clay Art Center comes to an end!

Ayer celebramos las artes comunitarias en Port Chester con la instalación de jardineras cerámicas y una ceremonia de corte de cinta en el Don Bosco Community Center. Clay Art Center tiene una asociación con Don Bosco desde que la convertimos en una organización sin fines de lucro en 2007. A través de esta asociación, Clay Art Center ofrece dos clases extraescolares semanales y clases del campamento de verano en Don Bosco, tal como clases de una vez para madres cada fin de semana del día de las madres--todo apoyado por el St. Faith's House Foundation y nuestros numerosos apoyadores. Las jardineras son una culminación de meses de trabajo por los estudiantes en las clases extraescolares de Don Bosco. Estamos muy orgullosos del trabajo que han hecho! 

El proyecto fue guiado por la artista en residencia de segundo año, Evelyn Mtika, que tuvo la idea para las jardineras volviendo a Clay Art Center después de enseñar una de sus clases en Don Bosco y viendo las grandes jardineras no-ceramicas afuera. Ya que sabía que el centro comunitario está lleno de energía y creatividad de los numerosos estudiantes que asisten a programas allí, ella quería llevar este espíritu para afuera. Después de trabajar sobre la logística con Don Bosco y el director de estudio, August, Evelyn se puso a trabajar rápidamente. Desde el inicio de este proyecto, Evelyn se ocupó de cada detalle y se aseguró de que las ideas de todos los estudiantes fueran incluidas. Si mira de cerca las jardineras, verá todas las ideas diferentes de los estudiantes incorporadas. Evelyn trajo las jardineras a Clay Art Center, donde las puso sub-esmalte, esmalte, y las coció. Las jardineras resultantes son un símbolo vivo de la creatividad, colaboración, y diversidad de Port Chester.
