Artist Statement

Julia Steiman is an artist and designer working primarily in ceramics. Experimentation and iterative design are crucial to her work as she explores color, line, tone as they interact with layering and depth in the physical form. She is deeply inspired by eastern European folk art and motifs, particularly Polish paper cuts, where flat planes of color overlap and painted shadows add depth. When narrative is incorporated, how can the complexity of texture and visual information resonate with our imperfect visual memory? Her work has been shown in galleries across the East Coast and is sold in multiple lovely stores in NYC.

Julia Steiman is an artist and designer with a focus on ceramics. Having worked as a UX designer for over twenty years, considering the possibilities and limitations of clay is exhilarating and deeply meaningful to her. She lives with her husband and two children in Brooklyn, New York.
