Artist Statement

This set of ceramic salt and pepper shakers draws inspiration from the sweet, joyful ritual of making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with my 2-year-old daughter. This set represents tangible expressions of love, process, food, and togetherness. The routine takes on a tender moment between mother and daughter. I move the step ladder to the counter so she can observe and learn the process of cutting the bread, opening the jars, and spreading the peanut butter and jelly evenly. I explored the balance of contrast and harmony: salty and sweet, smooth and textured. Like the ingredients, each shaker complements the other in color and form, being complete only when paired. The process of shaping these pieces is intentionally slow, in contrast to the often chaotic pace of parenting, being a full-time art teacher, and practicing artist. This functional set allows me to reflect on being present, connection, and the layers of meaning in everyday routines and parenting.
