Artist Statement

My work is inspired by the memory of my grandmother's house when I was growing up. Florals, lace, and loud colors were everywhere. My pieces are most often wheel-thrown and hand-built functional pots, altered both on and off the wheel. On some pieces, I utilize vibrant glaze and lacey textures. On others, I use atmosphere - firing them in wood and soda kilns to allow the brutal flame to alter their surface. I often think of the way our ancestors lived, and the thankless female labor necessary to keep society running smoothly in my grandmother's day. My female ancestors created countless artistic works - crocheting blankets, sewing clothes, embroidering wall hangings, the list goes on and on - and these objects were valued only as far as their function. My work seeks to change that narrative, creating functional objects and forcing the viewer to see them as art, rather than just another object within the daily grind.
