Artist Statement
The title of this piece comes from a Jewish spiritual tradition called Musar. Dating back to the 10 th Century, the purpose of Musar is to offer an alternative to traditional Jewish practice. Instead of following external rules and rituals, Musar offers a guide for personal transformation through inner spiritual practices, such as repeating and chanting phrases. As one rabbi put it, Musar involves “teaching the heart what the mind already understands.”
Artist Bio
My art reflects my interest in how we experience simple images, patterns, and color from our daily lives. I am interested in so-called “primitive” representations of the human experience and how they are filtered through our modern and complex consciousness. Our awareness of the complexities inherent in these representations are, for me, deeply linked to our day-to-day experiences. As we know, images, color and pattern evoke emotions, and we are always living our emotions.
