Templates are a simple but powerful design tool that can transform the way one builds with clay. In this project-based class, students will learn how to use and create simple templates for functional forms with confidence and consistency. Through a series of guided projects, we'll explore techniques for constructing projects such as cups, pitchers, boxes, vases, etc. and learn to alter, and adapt templates to try to develop your own designs.

Along the way, we'll explore and build templates by various ceramic artists, learn an on-line tool to help build a template and explore various surface techniques, and possibly build our own templates. We will explore finishing techniques, with plenty of opportunities to personalize each piece through texture, carving, and surface decoration. Students will leave with a collection of finished work, a library of reusable templates, and start to learn of a versatile way to hand build various projects
