Artist Statement

My studio practice is a bundle of color, repetition, humor, contrast, and play. Floral and plant influences have become a recurring theme in my work, paired alongside clean lines and bold silhouettes. These objects mimic my daily visuals-orderly, hard-edged sidewalks with incised openings home to untamed, natural foliage. Gridded out, city planned landscapes, block by block, row by row. I rely heavily on the physical attributes of clay and glaze to capture the pinch, pull, extrude, crack, and drip. This particular utilitarian piece, "A Prickly Pinch", invites interaction with a subject that specifically grow spines to deter contact. It explores the concept of unwanted invitation, requiring thoughtful engagement between the object and its user.
