Artist Statement
This group of items is my exploration of time. The split wood log takes 20 years to grow and 50 years to decompose. The plastic container takes 20 seconds to create and 500 years to degrade. My ceramic Nerikomi bowl, which is made of both porcelain and stoneware, took 54 hours to create and 1000 years to degrade. Beneath the fired bowl are several shards of greenware. There is a small slit in the fired bowl, allowing the water to drip onto the greenware - slowly dissolving it. This process is extremely slow. This water clock simulates the process of natural environmental decomposition.
Artist Bio
I grew up on the western edge of Minnesota and my extended family is from North Dakota near the Badlands. The striations of the landscape inspired me to create agateware and Nerikomi. I create mostly hand built forms as I layer, kneed and carve my clay to create my own layers. I also explore how my clay scraps can be transformed. The colored layers morph as I form my scrapes into ever smaller forms. I look to stone and the weathered landscape for inspiration.
