Artist Statement
I make functional one of a kind pieces, exploring the limits of clay and my skills on and off the wheel: I strive to let my initial vision respond to the clay during the making process. Fascinated by the intersection of form and the clay body, I craft each piece to be a unique visual and tactile experience through surface decoration, texture, and glazes. Much of my work uses negative spaces, which interact with surface decorations (often also created by removal of clay) that are frequently inspired by patterns from West African mud cloth fabrics of my childhood and organic motifs drawn from flora and fauna surrounding me. Commissioned, unique pieces are a thrilling part of my ceramic practice. The engaging conversation between clay, myself, and the client creates a tactile experience and visual beauty experienced in functional objects. The resulting handmade pots offer a tangible, touchable appreciation of form and function for both creator and user, making everyday moments sublime.
