Artist Statement

My artistic practice is fueled by an endless fascination with the soft, tactile nature of clay. I approach my work as a joyful exploration, a kind of play time, where intuition and improvisation guide each step. The process itself, from shaping the material to witnessing its dramatic transformation under extreme heat in the kiln, continually inspires me. Music and architecture serve as ongoing sources of inspiration, their rhythms and structures echoing in the forms I create. My love for both the material and the ceramic process drives me to experiment, celebrating the unpredictable possibilities that clay offers. Glaze is a critical element in my work, with its color and movement highlighting the contours and forms of each piece. I strive to use glazes in ways that accentuate the inherent qualities of the clay, emphasizing its softness and the dynamic changes it undergoes during firing. Ultimately, my practice is anchored in the belief that the interplay between material, process, and intuition opens infinite avenues for creative expression, connecting art to the worlds of music, architecture, and science.

Artist Biography

Steve graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Biology. While completing his biology degree and committed to professional school, he also pursued his passion for ceramics, spending many hours working in the university’s ceramic studios. After graduating from dental school, Steve balanced a career in dentistry with raising a family in New Jersey, while continuing to develop his work as a ceramic artist in his private studio. Now retired from dentistry, he is a full-time potter and teaches at The Art School at Old Church. Steve has received several awards for his work and has exhibited in galleries across the country.
