Artist Statement

My sculptural practice engages traditional sculptural forms to explore cultural questions that keep coming into my mind. I generally find myself fusing some contemporary material, found object or other element into classical representational contexts. For the last five years my work has centered on the human head/bust, sculpted in clay then glaze fired, situating the works in both sculptural and ceramic traditions. These works engage the Time-Space theme through their blend of classical forms with contemporary emotional resonance and real, current-day people. The bust figure, Askance, wears a meaning-laden sidelong glance and a down sweater.
