Artist Statement
Having lived in 3 continents, my inspiration comes from buildings, objects, and other geometric forms around me.
The inspiration for these pieces came from my visit to a temple in South India- an architectural marvel that was built almost a century ago. The heavy use of geometric shapes, especially in myriad ways in its windows was awe inspiring.
In designing these pieces, I used geometric shapes to draw the eye into the pot, as well as beyond it, in order to amplify dimensions that are more than tactile. These shapes are windows to the other side, and encourage one to pause and take a second look, to contemplate what may not have been apparent in the first place.
Artist Bio
Sheetal Mehta is a studio potter based in Westchester, NY. After a long stint in the corporate world of marketing and advertising, Sheetal chanced upon a pottery class in 2017, and immediately fell in love with both the clay and the wheel. Her pottery instruction has been mostly at Clay Art Center, (at Port Chester NY) learning primarily with Jeanne Carreau and Reena Kashyap. Sheetal has also attended classes and workshops by many expert potters such as Jen Allen, Molly Hatch, Brenda Quinn, Austin Coudriet and Moon DoBang, among others.
Sheetal has been using both wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create her work. She loves to make contemporary home accents that are meant to be used on a regular basis.
